What Is GORD?
Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is a chronic condition that occurs when the valve between the stomach and oesophagus, called the lower oesophageal sphincter, does not function properly. This allows stomach acid to leak back into the oesophagus, a process known as reflux or acid reflux.
While many people may experience occasional heartburn after a large meal, GORD is diagnosed when reflux happens more than twice a week.
It is a common condition in Australia, affecting people of all ages, including children, and often requires lifestyle changes and medical treatment to manage symptoms and prevent complications.
“Excellent service, very approachable thank you to the doctors and their assistance” – Cveta M.
Causes
- Weakness in the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES)
- Overeating or lying down soon after meals
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Alcohol or caffeine consumption
- Fatty, spicy, or acidic foods
- Certain medications (e.g. anti-inflammatories)
- Pregnancy
Symptoms
Symptoms of GORD can vary from person to person, but often include:
- Heartburn (burning sensation in the chest or throat)
- Regurgitation of acid or food into the mouth
- Chest discomfort or pain
- Chronic cough or throat irritation
- Hoarseness or voice changes
- Difficulty swallowing
- A feeling of lump in throat
Managing GORD
Managing GORD usually involves a combination of lifestyle changes and, if needed, medication. Simple adjustments such as avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, maintaining a healthy weight, and elevating the head while sleeping can make a big difference. Quitting smoking and reducing alcohol or caffeine intake may also ease symptoms. For persistent cases, doctors may prescribe medications like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2 blockers, or antacids to reduce stomach acid and protect the oesophagus. With the right approach, most people can successfully control their symptoms and prevent long-term complications.
